The Temple of the Sun and Temple of Jupiter [Baalbek, Lebanon]

4 May 1862

RCIN 2700974

The six standing monolithic columns are all that remain of the colonnade that ran around the outside of the Temple of Jupiter. They are the largest columns in the world carved from a single piece of stone, at a height of 22.9 metres. A legend about the founding of Baalbek stated that a race of giants constructed the buildings. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
