The Dolmabahçe Palace, completed in 1856, was built in a highly ornate European style selected by Sultan Abdülmecid to indicate the modernisation of the Ottoman Empire. Immediately following his arrival in Constantinople, the Prince of Wales was received here by the Sultan. He later described the palace as ‘very pretty and beautifully done up’.
