FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

Monolithic shrine in the Adytum of the Temple of Edfou [Temple of Horus, Edfu]

14 Mar 1862

RCIN 2700879

This photograph shows Bedford’s skill at composition. Perhaps inspired by the tiny shrine which looks like a sentry box, he has created a view of successive rectangular frames, one inside the other. By cropping the edge of the image to focus so closely on the gateway, he makes the final frame the edge of the photograph. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
