FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

Belfort Castle [Beaufort Castle, Lebanon]

24 Apr 1862

RCIN 2700953

The European Crusaders captured the hilltop in 1139 and probably began constructing the castle shortly afterwards. Control of the region changed hands several times until 1268 when the Muslims regained possession of the castle from the Knights Templar who had purchased it in 1260. At the time of the Prince’s visit, very little remained of the castle. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
