KAREL PHILIPS SPIERINCKS (BRUSSELS C. 1600 - ROME 1639)

Venus Sleeping, with Satyrs and Cupids

c.1630-40

RCIN 405568

Heavily influenced by French painting, Spierincks presents the contrast between sacred and profane love, embodied by the rustic couple on the left and the two spying satyrs. A winged putto attempts to defend his mistress, unlike his fellow attendants who get up to mischief whilst Venus sleeps.
