DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP 1610-BRUSSELS 1690)

The Virgin and Child

c.1650-59

RCIN 400932

In 1650 Teniers was commissioned by Archduke Leopold William, Governor of the Southern Netherlands, to create a catalogue of his Italian art collection. He made exquisite small-scale oil versions of each of the masterpieces to be reproduced as prints. These reveal Teniers’s ability to copy renowned Italian artists.
