SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641)

The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine

c. 1630

RCIN 405332

St Catherine of Alexandria had a vision where Christ offered her a ring, signifying her marriage to the Church. The broken wheel alludes to her torture and she holds the martyr’s palm. After his visit to Italy in 1621, Van Dyck was much influenced by Titian, evident here in his use of saturated colours to define space.
