HENDRICK VAN STEENWYCK THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP C. 1580 - THE HAGUE? 1649)

The Liberation of St Peter

Signed and dated 1619

RCIN 403041

Steenwyck uses sharp contrasts of light and shade to add intensity to the scene. An angel leads St Peter out of the darkness while the soldiers miraculously sleep undisturbed, allowing for an easy escape. The subject, taken from the Acts of the Apostles, symbolises the liberation of man’s soul after death.
