DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP 1610-BRUSSELS 1690)

The Drummer

Signed and dated 1647

RCIN 406577

This military painting was probably executed for Archduke Leopold William, commander-in-chief of the Spanish army. Teniers presents soldiers milling around in their camp with a still-life vignette in the foreground. The discarded armour perhaps hints at the imminent cessation of the war.
