SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS (SIEGEN 1577 - ANTWERP 1640)

Summer: Peasants Going to Market

c.1618

RCIN 401416

Figures, cattle and sheep form a procession snaking through this verdant landscape, probably on their way to market. Dawn is suggested by the contrast between the dark foreground and light streaming across the distance. Although often hung with Winter: The Interior of a Barn, the two paintings were not necessarily conceived as a pair.
