HANS MEMLING (C. 1440-1494)

Portrait of a Man

c. 1475-1480

RCIN 404419

Memling was an outstanding portraitist who skilfully combined faithful likenesses with a serene mood. The pendant around the sitter’s neck is likely to be a clue to his identity and the portrait itself may commemorate his initiation into a confraternity or society. His gesture and intent gaze indicate both humility and confidence.
