FRANS WOUTERS (LIERRE 1612-ANTWERP 1659)

Landscape with a Rainbow

c.1634

RCIN 404735

Wouters was a successful artist who worked both for the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II and for Charles I of England. This is an atmospheric, poetic landscape. Twilight approaches, and a rainbow decorates the sky following a storm. This scene represents man’s dependence on nature, with a farmer ploughing despite impending nightfall.
