CECIL BEATON (1904-80)

Princess Elizabeth with the infant Prince Charles

Dec 1948

RCIN 2999884

This is the first photograph of Prince Charles, the eldest child of Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh, to be released to the press. It was taken shortly before his christening. He was born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948 and his christening took place a month later, in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace. The brooch worn by Princess Elizabeth was a present from her parents following the Prince’s birth. Prince Charles assumed the additional title of Duke of Cornwall automatically on The Queen’s accession in 1952. Although he was named Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester in 1958, his investiture did not take place until 1969.
