King George VI with his daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, at Royal Lodge, Windsor, 11 April 1942 .

1942

RCIN 2999913

This photograph was taken during the height of the Second World War and deliberately presents a quiet, domestic picture of the Royal Family. The King decided that he and his family should remain in England throughout the war, sharing the bombing raids and rationing that his subjects experienced. While The King and Queen spent much of their time at Buckingham Palace, which was bombed nine times, the Princesses continued to live at Windsor, dividing their time between Royal Lodge and Windsor Castle.
