DOROTHY WILDING (1893-1976)

George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret in their Coronation Robes, 12 May 1937.

12 May 1937

RCIN 2999915

The formality of this photograph contrasts with the family group portrait taken only six months earlier. It was taken in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace immediately after the Coronation in Westminster Abbey, on 12 May 1937. This date had been set following King George V’s death in January 1936, and was retained after King Edward VIII’s abdication. The 1937 coronation was the first occasion for which a woman had been appointed as the official royal photographer.
