ALEXANDER MARSHAL (C. 1620-82)

Purple crocuses, cloth of gold crocus, liverwort (double form), poppy anemones and jay

c. 1650-82

RCIN 924272

This sheet of early spring flowers appears near the beginning of Marshal’s florilegium, which follows the course of the seasons. As in the drawing to the left, the three-dimensional appearance of the dead jay suggests that a real bird has fallen onto a page of painted flowers.
