WORKSHOP OF MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

False Coral Snake, Banded Cat-Eyed Snake and frogs

c. 1705?

RCIN 921226

As well as bringing back from Surinam many of the insect species which she included in the Metamorphosis, Merian also shipped home a number of snakes which she preserved in glass jars filled with brandy. Although their dramatic poses are fanciful, the markings of the snakes and the slight sheen on their bodies are recorded here in minute detail.
