The pitch apple is an epiphytic plant: it begins life as a seed deposited on the branch of a host tree by a bird or bat, sends long roots down to the ground, develops a large crown and eventually smothers its host. This is a tropical plant which Catesby could have seen during his trip to the Bahamas in 1725.
