WORKSHOP OF MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Ornate Lory on a branch of Peach

c.1705?

RCIN 921233

During Merian’s lifetime Amsterdam was a centre both of world trade and of scholarship. As a result it was home to numerous ‘cabinets of curiosities’, collections of man-made and natural objects (including animals) from all over the world. The ornate lory is native to Indonesia, and Merian probably saw it in one such Dutch collection.
