Like many Europeans, Cassiano was fascinated by the ever-increasing variety of previously unknown species that were being imported from other continents. Many of the fruits, seeds and legumes depicted here come from Africa, Asia and America, such as the raffia palm nut at top left, from tropical West Africa.
