This portrait is one of a pair showing Ferdinand II of Aragon and his wife, Isabella I of Castille, the king and queen of Spain and parents of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII. Their marriage in 1469 united the kingdoms of Aragon and Castille and transformed Spain into a major European power.
