PRINCE ALBERT

Letter from Prince Albert to Edward, Prince of Wales

This letter was written by Prince Albert on 25 March 1856 to his eldest son Edward, Prince of Wales. In it, Albert offers his son forgiveness for poor behaviour, and explains to his son how he can learn from his mistakes and do better in the future. Albert elaborates on his forgiveness, stating that parents are always willing to forgive their children when they ‘have understood & acknowledged their faults’.

Papers from the Royal Archives now published online show the value that Prince Albert placed on domestic life. Material in the collection includes early correspondence between Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, from their first meeting in 1836, through to his death in 1861. Notes and correspondence about the birth of their children also feature, along with Prince Albert’s correspondence with his eldest daughter, Princess Victoria  and his eldest son Edward, Prince of Wales. His correspondence with his children reveals his concern about their education and his encouragement of their interests in art and photography.
