Osborne House from below the terrace Aug 1851
RCIN 919847
This watercolour by one of Victoria’s favourite artist’s William Leighton Leitch shows the steps leading down from the Italianate terrace. The steps are flanked by a pair of stone lions, which were copies after statues Albert had seen in Florence. Queen Victoria greatly enjoyed the time she spent at Osborne, recording in her journal on 18 July 1854: ‘We breakfasted on the terrace with its fountains playing and the air perfumed with the smell of orange blossoms and rose, which quite cover the pergola.
