Miss Kate Terry (1844-1924) as a boy
1857Hand coloured photograph | 22.6 x 18.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2909980
As a gift for the 18th wedding anniversary of her parents Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, 15-year-old Princess Alice drew this scene from Shakespeare’s Richard II. She copied the composition from a photograph of the play’s performance, in which the actress Kate Terry played a boy, dressed in tunic, tights and a little cape. Rather than copying the photograph exactly, Alice adapted Terry’s pose, depicting her in profile with delicate, Pre-Raphaelite features.
