To counter fears that extracts would be published by the press, Sir Arthur Helps (1813–75) suggested that a public version of the book should be printed. This version appeared in 1868 and featured wood engravings based on photographs by George Washington Wilson. The queen wrote that the public editions, ‘should not be so dear, so that everyone can buy it'.
