When this chest of drawers was made in 1780 for Marie-Antoinette’s cabinet intérieur at Versailles, Riesener described it as being of a ‘new model’, with its gilt-bronze mounts in the form of floral garlands and swags, trellis marquetry arranged around sunflowers and marquetry plaque showing a pastoral trophy. The trophy echoed the trophies found on the wall silks hung in the room, which had been woven in Lyon by Jean Charton to designs created by Jacques Gondoin, a furniture designer attached to the French royal household.
