Work tables appeared in France from the mid-eighteenth century and were designed by cabinetmakers for reading, writing and needlework. This example, with adjustable candle-arms, would have helped provide extra light for such activities. Though likely made by Riesener, this table derives from a model created by his master, Oeben.
