Dagger and scabbard

1750 - 1800

RCIN 11264

A dagger or khanjar with a two edged re-curved steel blade, thickened at point, the hilt carved out of jade and inlaid with diamonds, rubies and emeralds to form a floral design. The scabbard covered with crimson velvet with jade mounts inlaid with floral design in gold with diamonds, rubies and emeralds.  A jade hilted dagger such as this example was considered to be an object of luxury in India and was probably commissioned by a wealthy patron. The gemstones are inset into the jade by using strips of highly refined gold, or kundan, to secure the stones using pressure rather than heat
