Bust of a woman

c.1995

RCIN 57815

The Shona people of Zimbabwe are known for their smooth soapstone sculptures marked by abstract features and stylised forms. This bust of a young woman has been polished to a shine. The deep cut eyes give the figure a pensive expression.

This sculpture was presented by the President of Zimbabwe on the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1995.
