Bowls of this kind were used for offerings to deities. They were made in diminishing sizes and placed inside one another on an altar in an arrangement known as Pai Sri.

The two pictured were sent to Queen Victoria by King Rama IV of Siam (King Mongkut) and presented by his ambassadors at Windsor Castle in November 1857.
