The Queen has a different flag for each country in which she is Sovereign. The white fabric flag shown here is flown to indicate The Queen's presence in Canada. The design was developed by the Canadian Heraldic Authority and approved by The Queen in 1961. It includes The Queen's blue personal flag in the centre, above a sprig of red maple leaves. A green maple sprig had formed formed part of the Royal Arms of Canada granted by King George V in 1921; in 1957 their colour was changed to brilliant red.
 

Calls for a National Flag of Canada gained momentum throughout the early twentieth century and in 1964 a parliamentary committee was appointed to review proposed designs. A flag featuring a single red maple leaf submitted by George Stanley was selected. The new flag was made official by a proclamation from Queen Elizabeth II on 28 January 28 1965.
