In 1792–3, the fur trapper, Alexander Mackenzie led the first east-west expedition across North America north of Mexico. This expedition was a remarkable achievement. Using canoes to venture up rivers high into the Rocky Mountains, Mackenzie, accompanied by two Indigenous guides and six voyageurs, crossed the mountains and reached the Pacific Ocean in July 1793. This account of the expedition was once part of the library of George IV at Carlton House.
