Pierre-Esprit Radisson was a French trader who served both England and France in the middle of the seventeenth century. In 1670, Radisson petitioned Charles II to establish the Hudson’s Bay Company to undermine the French monopoly in the fur trade. This fair copy of his account of his activities in Canada between 1682 and 1684 describes the country and his dealings with Indigenous people and other merchants. It appears to be dedicated to Charles II or James II, who granted Radisson citizenship in 1687, however, it is unknown if it is the king’s copy. It was likely acquired for the present Royal Library soon after its reestablishment during the reign of William IV, whose cypher appears on the binding.
