In 1970, Queen Elizabeth II with members of her family visited Australia to mark the bicentenary of Captain Cook’s famous voyage in 1770. She also visited other Commonwealth member nations including Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand and Canada. In this photograph, the queen is seen pointing to one of the countries that she visited that year on a globe. Wearing the New Zealand silver fern brooch on her left shoulder, she spoke about the rich diversity of the Commonwealth nations and “this remarkable collection of friendly people.” In 1970 the city of Edinburgh also hosted the Commonwealth Games.
