1970 Christmas Broadcast

The Queen's Christmas address to the nation in December 1970 ©

In 1970, Her Majesty The Queen with members of her family visited Australia to mark the bicentenary of Captain Cook’s famous voyage in 1770. The Queen also visited other Commonwealth member nations including Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand and Canada. In this photograph, The Queen is seen pointing to one of the countries that she visited that year on a globe. Wearing the New Zealand silver fern brooch on her left shoulder, The Queen spoke about the rich diversity of the Commonwealth nations and “this remarkable collection of friendly people.” In 1970 the city of Edinburgh also hosted the Commonwealth Games.
