Ortelius’s atlas, considered to be the f irst modern atlas, was f irst published in 1570, and went through 25 editions by the time of his death. Produced during the European Age of Discovery, each edition reflected the latest geographic knowledge, and contained new maps and information. This copy of his map of the world is from a French edition of 1587, and shows the world as Shakespeare would have imagined it.
