WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616)

The Merry Wives of Windsor

1910

RCIN 1059106

An oak tree, the Castle and the Order of the Garter are all aspects of Windsor which Shakespeare draws on in The Merry Wives of Windsor. Embroidered on the red damask covers of this copy of Shakespeare’s comedy is Windsor Castle, surrounded by a garter with details picked out in gold thread, and with oak leaves and acorns behind. Above and below, on banners sewn with silver thread, are quotations from the play. This book was presented to Queen Mary by Katharine Denison, a skilled embroiderer, in April 1917.
