QUEEN VICTORIA

Queen Victoria’s Journal, vol. 35 (1 January 1853 – 26 August 1853)

4 February 1853

On 4 February 1853 Charles Kean’s company performed Macbeth at Windsor Castle as part of the Windsor Theatricals. Queen Victoria recorded the event in her diary: ‘We went over to the Rubens Room, after 8, & Shakespeare’s splendid Tragedy of “Macbeth” was extremely well given. The scenery, including the Cave & Caldron scene with the apparitions, was admirably managed, & the dresses beautiful, & most correct. Both Keans acted very well, but she in particular. It is a most interesting, thrilling, & heartrending play.’
