This is a preparatory sketch for a full-length portrait of Prince Albert commissioned by Christ’s Hospital (1845) as a pendant to an equestrian portrait of Queen Victoria. Prince Albert is shown in Field-Marshal’s uniform with his charger, as he appeared at a review of the Regiment of Royal Horse Guards and the 2nd Battalion of Coldstream Guards at Windsor on 11 June 1845. Given to Queen Victoria by Lady Grant after the artist’s death
