Thomas Campbell, from Edinburgh, set up a studio in Rome in 1818 and produced portrait busts for many eminent visitors. He returned to London and undertook a number of commissions for monuments in Scotland. The Duke of Gordon was a soldier, politician, Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland and Governor of Edinburgh Castle. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1872
