JAMES GILES (1801-70)

A View of Balmoral

Signed and dated 1848

RCIN 405007

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had a deep love of Scotland and in 1848 they acquired their own highland home, Balmoral Castle and estate, in Aberdeenshire. This view shows the old castle beside the river Dee. The Queen and the Prince replaced this with a larger castle built in the Scottish baronial style, which they moved into in 1855 and visited regularly throughout Queen Victoria's reign. Given by Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, Christmas 1848
