PETRUS VAN SCHENDEL (1806-70)

Market Scene by Night

RCIN 407532

This nineteenth-century Dutch artist keeps alive the tradition of the Golden Age. He re-creates Gerrit Dou’s varied light sources, teeming detail and hint of flirtation between tradesman and maidservant. Queen Victoria thought the Dutch Old Masters painted in a ‘low style’; this new master achieves something sweeter and more genteel. Given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria in 1845
