HENDRICK POT (HAARLEM C.1585-AMSTERDAM 1657)

Lady and Gentleman in an Interior, 'A startling Introduction'

RCIN 405520

The exact subject of this painting is not known but the gist is obvious: a chaste lady threatens to stab herself rather than submit to the advances of a gentleman, who appears duly abashed. The dogs hint at the vice in the story; the shaft of light at the virtue. Acquired by Charles I Cat. 18
