Charles I’s inventory describes this figure as a ‘swaggering laffing fellowe’ – the embodiment of a carefree wastrel. During his visit to Rome, Ter Brugghen was inspired by Caravaggio’s gritty and violent realism, but he himself worked in a more painterly style and treated more amiable subjects.
