Steenwyck was a native of Antwerp who worked in England for two decades (1617 – 37) and was much patronised by Charles I. This panel uses the story of the angel freeing St Peter as an excuse for a brilliant perspectival depiction of a vaulted cellar complex seen in pale lamp-light. Presumably commissioned by Charles I
