WILLIAM MULREADY (1786-1863)

The Interior of an English Cottage

RCIN 405095

George IV paid 300 guineas for this modern Irish work, which was obviously inspired by the Old Dutch Masters he collected so assiduously. In the two centuries between Adriaen van Ostade (whose work can be seen in the red gallery) and William Mulready, cottage life had become edifying – the women here keep the hearth warm for their hard-working man. Acquired by George IV in 1828
