St Fredericus, Bishop of Utrecht, was martyred in 838 ad on the orders of the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor. This is a design for one of 12 prints of the Bishops of Utrecht, engraved by Bloemaert’s son Frederick. Utrecht maintained an artistic identity distinct from that of the rest of the Netherlands, with an artists’ guild uniting both Catholic and Reformed factions.
