GERRIT JENSEN (ACTIVE 1680-D.1715)

Seaweed Writing Desk

RCIN 35317

Jensen was a cabinetmaker of Dutch or Flemish origin, and created this desk for Mary II’s new apartments at Kensington Palace. Jensen’s bill calls it a ‘folding writing table fine Markatree with a Crown and cipher 22 pounds and 10 shillings’. The marquetry is known as ‘seaweed’ due to its naturalistic scrolling design. Acquired by Mary II for Kensington Palace.
