REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669)

Christ and St Mary Magdalen at the Tomb

RCIN 404816

George IV exchanged some important paintings for this masterpiece, though as a religious scene it differed from much of his collection. Rembrandt imaginatively interprets the Biblical story as it might have happened: Mary Magdalene has spoken to the burly angels but has not yet recognised Christ, whom she takes for a gardener. Acquired by George IV in 1819
