GERARD TER BORCH (ZWOLLE 1617-DEVENTER 1681)

A Gentleman pressing a Lady to drink

RCIN 404805

This is the most easily recognisable stock situation in Dutch visual comedy: the seducer hovers like a vulture over his intended victim, eager to refill her glass. The artist supports the theme with crudely suggestive details (like the phallic neck of the bottle) and subtle renderings of the textures of the lady’s most luxurious wardrobe. Acquired by George IV in 1812 Cat. 1
