MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Cotton-Leaf Physicnut with Giant Sphinx Moth

1702-03

RCIN 921195

Merian described the behaviour of the caterpillar of the Giant Sphinx Moth (Cocytius antaeus) in great detail, noting that it ‘thrashed around wildly’ when she touched it, and that when it became a chrysalis, that too ‘was very restless’.
